Hello,
My name is CJ Lembke. I've had a strong passion for horses, starting when I was 2 years old. At the age of 5, I participated in riding lessons on the weekends. I've always understood horses on a different level and I've always felt understood by them. I have a deep fascination for the physical ability of a horse, whether they're running barrels, cutting, going down the fence, reining or just running through the pasture. Horses have made my dreams come true and allowed me to build numerous prolific operations! I married the love of my life, Curt Ross in 2024 and we started this journey together! As an animal lover, I have a special little dog that has been by my side since 2015. His name is Junior and we let him believe that this operation is his. He's the king of my world and goes everywhere with me. Here at Rafter Cactus Performance Horses, we proudly raise Quarter Horses for many disciplines and I have taken an interest in Marketing, Photography and Graphic Design! Please check out my full story, below!

My Story
I was born in Denver, Colorado and adopted at birth, where I was raised in a growing suburb. At 2 years old, I was first introduced to horses. This is where my fascination began! I was 5 years old when I started taking riding lessons and this only stoked the fire! I wrote letters to Santa, wished upon a star and even tried to ask the tooth fairy if I could have a horse. When my parents ran out of horse books to buy and were tired of hearing me ask for a horse, they finally gave in and I got my first horse at 8 years old! I discovered barrel racing and really enjoyed it so I decided to focus on that while I was a teenager/young adult. My free time was spent researching bloodlines and thinking of the endless possibilities for creating the perfect athlete! I competed in college rodeo and moved onto the amateur and pro circuits, then I cultivated my riding to become a barrel horse trainer full time! In 2014, 70 Ranch Performance Horses was created as a training operation. My father is the owner of the 70 Ranch in Colorado, so I wanted to carry that name somehow. In 2015, my world was flipped upside-down. I was working with a young colt and he came out from under me, leaving me in the dirt. I broke my back in numerous locations, nearly shattering my lumbar vertebrae and causing a multitude of damage. After a long period of time on bedrest, I was able to graduate to physical therapy, then moved onto pilates, but had to make the tough decision to breed horses, instead of riding full time. I partnered with my parents and started the breeding operation. In 2018, I had stem cell injections and they allowed me to ride a little bit, but I became very selective in which horses I rode. I added a few nice mares to the herd and began learning about the breeding industry and spent a lot of time around the foals, where I gained a tremendous amount of love, appreciation and respect for the mare side of breeding. As my operation grew, I found an absolutely gorgeous piece of land in Gainesville, Texas, where the property needed a little work but showed great promise!
I had the incredible opportunity to manage multiple "once in a lifetime" horses and began to learn about the stallion side of the business. I really enjoy playing "match maker", by trying to create the best crosses in the industry. Marketing and equine photography became an interest of mine and I spent several years growing my skill through the growth of the business. I met Curt Ross in 2021 and we immediately hit it off! He showed me that he was willing to put up with my crazy lifestyle in the horse world! As a general contractor, Curt took on extensive building projects and finished the massive stallion barn, complete with 2 barn apartments, a gym, a large and quiet conference room and a giant office! We got married in October of 2024 and moved to a nice little property in Maypearl, Texas- near his hometown, Waxahachie.
Here, we started Rafter Cactus Performance Horses by carrying on some of the younger generations that were raised by me, at 70 Ranch and we plan to grow our program without a big "corporate" feel. I now offer my marketing services to the public and I'm continuously building my skill, attention to detail and digital creation!
